How annuities work

A contract that pays you

An annuity is a contract with an insurance company. You put money in, it grows tax-deferred, and later it can pay you a steady income, either for a set number of years or for life.

  1. Fixed annuities

A set interest rate for a set number of years, similar to a CD but issued by an insurance company.

  2. Fixed indexed annuities

Interest linked to a market index, up to a cap, with your principal protected from market losses.

  3. Income you can't outlive

Optional income riders can pay you for life. They usually have a yearly fee, which we'll explain.

  4. Plan for access

Most annuities have surrender charges for early withdrawals above a yearly free amount, so we size them to money you won't need right away.

Annuity questions

What is an annuity?

It's a contract with an insurance company that grows your money tax-deferred and can turn it into a steady income later, for a set time or for life.

Fixed or fixed indexed annuity?

A fixed annuity pays a set rate. A fixed indexed annuity credits interest based on a market index, up to a cap, and protects your principal from market losses. We'll compare current rates for both.

Annuity vs 401k: which is better?

A 401k is where you save while you work, often with an employer match. An annuity is often used near or in retirement to protect savings and create income. Many people roll part of a 401k into an annuity when they retire.

Can I take money out of an annuity?

Most annuities let you take out a portion each year without a charge. Larger early withdrawals usually have surrender charges for the first several years, and withdrawals before age 59½ may have a tax penalty.
