What is an IUL?

Life insurance first, with room to grow

An indexed universal life (IUL) policy is permanent life insurance. Its cash value earns interest based on a market index such as the S&P 500, up to a cap, and the floor means a bad year for the market doesn't reduce your credited interest below zero.

  1. Flexible premiums

Within limits, you can adjust how much you pay as your budget changes.

  2. Growth potential with a floor

Interest is credited based on an index, up to a cap. In a down year, the floor keeps credited interest from going negative.

  3. Know the costs

Policy charges continue every year. Underfunding a policy can cause it to lapse, so we'll walk through realistic numbers with you.

IUL questions

Is an IUL a good investment?

An IUL is life insurance, not an investment account. It can be a good fit if you want permanent coverage plus cash value growth potential and you understand the caps, fees and policy terms.

IUL vs whole life: what's the difference?

Whole life has fixed premiums and fixed growth. An IUL has flexible premiums and growth linked to an index, with caps and a floor. Whole life is more predictable; an IUL has more growth potential and more moving parts.

IUL vs 401k: which is better?

They do different jobs. A 401k is a retirement savings account, often with an employer match. An IUL is life insurance with cash value. Many people use both, and we'll help you see where each fits.

Can I lose money in an IUL?

The floor protects your credited interest from market losses, but policy charges still come out every year. If the policy is underfunded, the cash value can shrink.
